Placer County Board of Education (PCOE)
360 Nevada Street, Auburn CA 95603
A public hearing for Western Sierra Collegiate Academy (WSCA) 7-12 public charter high school appeal will be held on Thursday, October 9th at the Placer County Board of Education offices in Auburn, located at 360 Nevada Street. Please plan to attend this hearing to show your support for WSCA!
WSCA representatives have met with the Placer County Office of Education and are officially appealing the Rocklin Unified School District’s decision to deny the WSCA charter petition. Because school districts often deny high-quality charters like WSCA, the law provides charter school petitioners the right to appeal a decision. Gayle Garbolino-Mojica, Placer County Superintendent of Schools, has assured WSCA founders the county review will be a fair process, consistent with the law.

Dear WSCA Supporters,
Thank you to all WSCA supporters for your ongoing encouragement in the efforts to create Western Sierra Collegiate Academy. On August 20th, the Rocklin Unified School District (RUSD) Board of Trustees voted to deny the WSCA charter petition. This was not unexpected. The strong opposition the district holds against the establishment of WSCA has been communicated to us. Despite this we remained hopeful the Board of Trustees would follow the law, do the right thing and vote to approve the WSCA charter. They did not. Fortunately, the law allows for an appeal process to the County Board of Education when a local school district, against the will of parents, rejects a high-quality charter petition.
On January 16, 2008, the Rocklin Unified Board of Trustees voted to deny the WSCA charter petition. This was not unexpected. Because school districts deny high-quality charters like WSCA, the law provides us with the right to appeal this denial. (Pacific Collegiate School, which is the model for WSCA, was also denied by their local district. They are now ranked the number 2 high school in the nation!)
Thank you for the overwhelming support our parents, teachers, and community members showed at this meeting. Your continued support will be important as we move forward!
