Studio Arts I/II is a beginning art course that provides students with the opportunity to explore a variety of media and create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art. Students will apply their knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design when creating work of art. Students will learn and develop the techniques and skills necessary to complete assignments using various media. Areas of study may include drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and renowned artists and works of art. Studio Arts I/II is designed to specifically address the California Visual Arts Standards.

Complete a final 15 minute drawing in your sketchbook. If you are missing any sketches, make sure you complete as many sketches as you are missing.

Bring an interpretation of a famous artwork to share with the rest of the class. This interpretation is not done by you, but rather by another artist (does not have to be done by a famous artist). Please bring the interpretation as well as the original work to share. You can print the images, or email them to me a [email protected] (I can project them).

Find a PHOTO (no drawings, clip art, etc.) reference of a landscape. Please print it in color as you will need to observe the colors carefully and represent them accurately. The reference should be at least 4" by 6" and of good quality.

Find and print a self-portrait to share with the class. Be prepared to share the artist, title, medium, and what you find interesting about the work of art. You can email me the picture if you do not have access to a printer.

You will be spending the next couple of weeks doing an art project of your choice. This is a chance to work with the medium and subject matter of your choice, so be creative! Write a one paragraph proposal that includes what you will be doing, what you will be working with, and why you have chosen this (your concept).

Bring a pumpkin to class to paint (optional). If you cannot bring one, you can work on an alternative assignment. The pumpkin can be small or large, but not so large that it is difficult to transport!!! Come with ideas for how you want to paint it!

Bring a photo reference of an animal (insects or reptiles are okay too), to use for your next assignment. References must be at least 4" by 6" and of good quality. You can bring a personal photograph or find one in a magazine or online. References must be photographs (no clip art, drawings, etc.). Your reference does not need to be printed in black and white. Try to choose an interesting or meaningful reference.

Bring a colored photo reference of the interior or exterior of a room or building(s). The reference should be at least 8" by 10" and of good quality. You can find an image online, but magazines are also a good resource for references like these.

Bring an artwork done outside of class to share with the rest of the class. If you do not have one, you can bring a family or friend's artwork. If you cannot bring one of those, you can print a picture of a famous artwork you are drawn to. You do not have to give a lengthy presentation surrounding the work, but be prepared to provide basic information.

Find a PHOTO reference to use when creating a slot sculpture. The reference can be printed in black and white or in color. Please print a picture that is at least 4" by 6" and of good quality. The reference must be one of an entire figure (person or animal). You must also find a reference of a pattern that you will use to fill the silhouette of the same figure. The pattern does not need to be a photograph but must relate in some way to the figure you have chosen. This reference must also be at least 4" by 6" and of good quality.
