Chemistry Students,
For tonight and tomorrow, please work on the rather large Review Packet for Accumulative testing. I will be either posting or have available for you tomorrow the key for the packet, including detailed explanations for the questions on concepts we have not been able to get to.
Remember the large amount of resources available to you on my Web page of things I have presented over the year that you can use to help refresh some of the concepts.
I have also posted the Presentation I gave today on Solutions as well as the one created for Thermodynamics and typed notes. They are also attached to this homework notification.
First period class - I made an adjustment to the grading set up for Thursdays Practice Test, that I was unable to communicate to all of you in Advisory: There are 90 questions on the Practice Review Test, but on the STAR there are only 60. I will be basing the practice grade from 60 questions, targeting questions of the concepts that we lack formal instruction to use as some of the 30 disregarded.
REMINDER TO ALL: This practice is for review and cannot hurt your grade at all, however if you do well (thus showing mastery) AND you have the Review Packet "completed" (this is your ticket) you may swap this grade with any (1 only) of our summatives from the year.
**NOTE on the Review Packet if you have previously shown mastery on certain concept areas, then answer 2-3 representative questions for that area and that would be considered complete.
If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]

TEST CH 13 & 14 (States of Matter and Gas Laws) on Thursday 4/11
Homework today, many of you worked during class and were able to get through a good part of the Practice problems handed out in 2 worksheets (1- front and back, 2-Packet labeled Ch 14.4)
Both of these are due on Thursday 4/4 - They are expected to be completed and ready to hand in on Thursday.
ALSO NOTE: My expectations are that any outstanding Re-takes need to be completed by next Fri 4/12. Be sure to schedule your re-teaches with me and complete the application to submit including parent signatures. I freely offer my lunches on WED and FRI (your advisory) to give more opportunities for re-teaches - you just need to arrange with me prior to lunch that day. I am also available in the mornings. I arrive before 7:00am most days and you can arrange a time to come in before school starts for re-teaching. Several students have already taken advantage during this time with good success.
We are moving forward to Ch 16 & 17 next week as we continue to review for the Test on 4/11. You should be receiving a large packet for each Chapter by Monday that we will work on as a class and individually.
See you Thursday! Mrs. Ziegler

1) Complete the Lab write-up we reviewed on Thursday if you did not turn it in. &
2)Read all of Chapter 14. Try the worksheet for Gas Laws. NOTE* - We went pretty quick through the lesson on Thursday, so it is okay if some of it gives you struggles, the assignment is to give the problems a good try using Chapter 14 as a guide and the power points uploaded on my WSCA website. All of the concepts are in Chapter 14.
Section 1 introduces the properties of gases which is also touched on in Chapter 13.
The Gas Laws and the sections of Ch 14 they are discussed, are the following:
Boyles Law - Section 2 p418 Charles Law - Section 2 p420

Hello Chemistry students and Parents,
We had an exciting lab set up today and as things sometimes work out in real world labs, it did not go as planned. We had a few students that were able to get to the end powder. We will turn this disappointment into a learning opportunity and discuss what might have been contributing factors to our problem. The write-up will be completed in class next week.
Many of you are really struggling with CH 10 dimensional analysis, I will be having my lunch in class tomorrow so you may get a pass to come in during your advisory to get help. The worksheets are designed to walk you through, but you still need other resources. Reading the book, using your notes and reviewing the power points that are on my webpage. There are two attachments as well as two links to video power points. I used at least two of them in class, but felt the others would be helpful too.
Monday the Feb 4 - we will be having a Quiz on Chapter 10. Be sure to review the main concepts associated with the dimensional analysis we have been working on.
Homework - practice, practice, practice- p315: 50, 52(d), 53(c), 56, 58(a-b), 59(a-c), 60(a), 61(c), 63(c), 64(c), 68(a).
Note: #61 You need to remember that: density = mass/volume and @STP 22.4L = 1 mol
p302 addresses density as well. Here is a sample question to help out -
#61(a)- density of C3H8 is what @STP? Molar Mass = Carbon- 12g/mol *3 = 36 Total = 44g/mol
Hydrogen- 1g/mol * 8 = 8
density of C3H8 = 44g * 1mol = 1.96 g/L
1mol 22.4 L

Happy Thursday Chemistry Students and Parents,
We are learning about Moles, not the furry creature moles but the chemical mole that is equal to Avogadro's Number (6.02 x 1023).
After our discussion today and multiple examples, you all should have the tools to dive into the dimensional analysis problems for chapter 10. If you need refreshing or reinforcement, I have posted the power point links on the Chapter 9-10 resources page.
Homework Due Monday 1/28 (Mini Monday) is the following: Read 10.2 - 10.3 (10.1 if you didn't for last Tues homework) Complete pgs 102-108 of the big packet in the middle of those pages are pg 95-97 read and complete those also but SKIP the READING SKILLS BOX on p97.
Test scores for Ch 9 were shown to students today. Applications to Resubmit for Retakes went out to those students that received an "I" as well as any students who wanted to improve their understanding and grade. The application must be completed and signed by student and parent or guardian before the retake may be taken. It is your responsibility to come to me and set up re-teach time to complete test corrections, assignments and extra re-teach material if needed. All retakes for Chapter 9 should be completed by next Friday February 1st.
SCIENCE FAIR UPDATE:
I am now going to be reminding all students to keep on top of their Science Fair Projects on every homework update. Due date for completion (Board included) is Monday February 25th 2013.
Although most of this information has been passed out, I think it is important to have access to it online- The due date list, Task 1, 2 & 3 sheets, and the Summative Assessment rubric for the projects. are attached to this homework as well as on my pages labeled Science Fair. Please note that the judging of the boards is taking place throughout the school week of the 25th of Feb. This judging will be done by college science student volunteers from the local college. This judging is not part of the Summative assessment grading that each credentialed science teacher will be grading based on the attached rubric.
Lastly, If you click on Mrs. Dixon and go to her web pages there is a special one labeled Science Fair. This site gives a wealth of information about the event, judging, grading etc. If has a FAQ (frequently asked questions) document as well.
Have a great evening and weekend! See you in class on Monday. Don't forget, if you have questions on the homework, email or stop by tomorrow for help.

Hello Chemistry Science Students and Parents,
I want to communicate clearly to all of you how I have the end of the semester planned out as well as how the grading policy is set-up. I know there has been some confusion around campus recently.
Today, students took their last regular summative assessment on CH 7 and 8. Next Thursday 12/13 will be a Lab practical that will be a portion of their Accumulative summative assessment. Tuesday 12/18 will be the written portion of the Accumulative assessment. Overall this two part assessment is still worth the same as any other summative assessment (100 points).
I will have today's assessment graded and handed back to the students by Monday 12/10, I want time for any student that did not show proficiency for the concepts to be able to have re-teach(es) and a retake before the end of the semester. Following this same idea, the accumulative assessments are set up earlier than the end of the last week, for the time to re-teach and retake before the end of the semester. It is up to you, the student to follow-up with me and fulfill the requirements for eligibility of a retake.
Eligibility for a retake requires the following tasks:
1) A minimum of 2 re-teaches with me. (for students clearing an "I")
2) Test corrections (can be written on test) that I must see.
3) All assignments for that unit or set of chapters to be completed.
4) Any other re-teach activities/assignments I may have given. (Done on an individual basis)
** For students who earned a 70 or above and are trying to improve their grade , I only require one re-teach instead of 2 with me.
I have informed the students this week that next Tuesday 12/11 is the last day to take any retakes for previous tests - Unit 1, and Ch 4-5. Many thoughts are involved in setting this deadline but mostly, it is so the students can focus on the rest of their upcoming tests(in all subjects) and if needed, retakes of those. (Hopefully, No retakes for those will be needed!)
Grading Policy Confusion:
As stated in my syllabus at the beginning of the school year, this class is 100% summative. I do many formative assessments during the class time as well as by collecting key assignments and grading them. I enter the key assignments into the grade book, but are not included in the final letter grade.
Any student receiving an " I" on any summative assessment indicates they have not completed mastery of all the core standards for Chemistry, set for this semester; therefore, they receive an " I" for their semester grade. The " I" may be cleared by retaking the summative assessment and demonstrating proficiency.
In other words, regardless of other assessment grades earned this semester, if a student does not show proficiency on one summative assessment and has not cleared the "Incomplete" for that assessment, then they have not successfully mastered all of the specific set of standards that I have deemed a necessary part of learning Chemistry. Thus the grade given for the semester is an "I".

Good Evening Chemistry students and parents,
On Tuesday, we talked a lot about Science Fair. Hopefully you all now have a clearer understanding of what's expected and why.
Remember to read through the Summative Assessment Grading Rubric for science fair projects so I can help to clarify any questions you have. On Monday 12/3: The second check off is due - Background research on your chosen topic (at least three resources) Use the TASK 2 worksheet handed out on Tuesday to complete the required criteria.
Thursday during class amongst the Molecular Model Lab there will be time to work on your Science Fair research etc., so if you have electronics to help you with your research, try and bring them to class as well as your regular science materials.

Wonderful Chemistry students and parents,
On Tuesday, we worked on all of the worksheets covering Lewis Dot structures, ionic bonding, covalent bonding and VSEPR theory molecular models.
THURSDAY 12/6 - SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT (TEST) ON CHAPTER 7 & 8
I handed out the Chapter 7 and 8 Practice Review. Complete this by test day at the latest. The sooner you complete it though, the more time you will have to ask questions and work on your weak spots. Note* - the review should not be the only focus when preparing for this summative assessment. The worksheets and notes will be just as important to review.
This Thursday we will be taking the concepts of the worksheets to 3-d models (hands-on). The Molecular Model Lab is so cool. It's like playing with toys while learning!! During the down time (we only have a few kits) there will be time to work on your Science Fair project as well as continue to work on these current concepts. The more practice the better.
Have a good night! Mrs. Ziegler
