Assignment

Hello Students,

Just a reminder, tomorrow is the LAST day for resubmissions for a higher grade. Please check PowerSchool and make sure that if you've turned something in, it's been recorded. Several assignments have been turned in without names throughout the semester and it's quite possible that your hard work is sitting in a box right now, graded, earning you no credit. If you are unable to turn in your resubmissions tomorrow and you have ANY incomplete summative assignments please make plans to attend summer school.

Thank you,

Assignment

Hello Students!

Please remember to make a list of physical characteristics that you can use to make a cladogram of your penguins and build the cladogram. There may be more than one way to build this, and it may be difficult, that's okay! Do the best you can to classify those penguins, you need a starting cladogram for Monday.

Use your BLAST handout for help or reference the "What did T-Rex Taste Like" assignment. The Penguin Cards and the BLAST Lab are attached. On Monday, please remember to bring your laptop/device because we will be checking your cladograms against cladograms made through NCBI to see to what extent morphological characteristics are useful when compared to genetic data.

Remember, your Chapter 16 Reading Practice will be due next Thursday the 3rd, please have your practice done!

I've attached the Chapter 16 Prezi (Evolution Number 5) from David Knuffke and the question guide (Evolution5ClassificationCH16) as well as the Chapter 16 Study Guide. These are both options, remember for the PDQ guide please
        Open the presentation.
        Interact with it.
        Answer the “Questions to answer”.
Make sure you understand the “Things you should make sure you understand”.
Feel free to view the “Supplementary Resources”.
Write down any questions that you have about the material.

Remember, this is ONE option that you have for your practice (you may still write a summary, make flashcards, make a video, compose and choreograph an interpretive dance, whatever helps you to study!)

If you have questions, please feel free to email and I'll see you Monday!

Assignment

Hello Awesome AP Students!

Please remember to read and annotate the BLAST Lab and remember that if you missed 15 or more on your Chapter 14 and Chapter 15 Practice quiz, your new "practice" and quiz corrections are due Monday. The Phylogenetic trees click-and-learn will be done in class on Monday as well as completing the BLAST lab, so please bring a computer or device to school with you if you are able. The Penguin Phylogeny is part of the BLAST Lab, so even though it's on your schedule, please know that you're working on it (i.e. not due, doing-in-class). Chapter 16 reading will be due NEXT Monday the 31st, begin thinking about what practice choice you will make. Lab write-ups for FastPlants, Winogradsky, or Planaria is due on April 24th (remember, you have a choice) and it will be in miniposter format (handed out in class). Here is the link to What does T-Rex Taste like? http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/education/explorations/tours/Trex/navigation.html
If you don't have your worksheets for it, here are links to those:

Please remember to bring your "Evolution of..." posters to class. Spend no more than 15 minutes researching a fascinating organism and how it evolved, bring your research to class (yes, even if this means cutting and pasting--just cite where you cut---see below). Put your findings on a poster (or standard letter paper) and bring them to share tomorrow! I built an example about Ostriches (didn't you always wonder about ostriches!?) Linneaus called them "Sparrow Camels!" in Latin when they were first officially named (Struthio camelus). Isn't that delightful? Tomorrow we work on our H-W Excel lab, please remember to bring your laptops if you have them.

Have a great day!

Hello Students,

Thank you for your hard work in class today! It's great to see you all again.

Homework is to insure that both Transcription and Translation POGILs are completed.

Our December Articles are changing platforms! SciTable, we loved you but you let us down...

Please join Edmodo and our "AP Biology 2013-2014" Class if you have not done so already (some of you are in from this summer)---we'll be using Edmodo for our article conversations from now on, here's the link: https://www.edmodo.com/home#/group?id=5287613 and the Group Code: is6hfv

Your December article will look a bit different this month: we'll talk about the specifics tomorrow in class and it will be due on December 15th instead of the 1st, with replies by the end of break.

Hello Intrepid AP Bio Warriors! (insert cheer here)

I'm excited to get back into our classroom and begin DNA Barcoding, but I wanted to insure that we're ready to go. I received some feedback from some of our warriors that the POGIL needs some dissection in class, that it was challenging. Thank you for letting me know! We're going to push back our lab challenge to the 3rd and use the 2nd to go through the POGILs together (which will give me time to obtain the supplies we need, depending on what you've come up with!). Remember, it's okay to make mistakes with these: they're designed to help you think through and arrive at a solution. If you already knew the answers before you did them, there wouldn't be much learning going on. I'll show you my thought process as we go through them together when we return. In the meantime, here are two short resources to help you out if you have time. This isn't homework: it's just for your help if you need it and it will relieve stress (I know I'm always less stressed when I understand things!).

Assignment

Just a quick reminder, our first Science Fair Assignment is due on Monday. It has three parts:

  1. Read the list of 30 UN Global Issues and Pick 5 to read more carefully (click these 5 links)
  2. Pick your top three selections and write them down: bring these to class.
  3. Read Chapter one of the Student STEM Handbook and do Student Handout #1: Focusing Preliminary Research Ideas. (To do this, go to the science fair website, scroll to the bottom of the page and select the attachment for "Student STEM Handbook," then OPEN the handbook and read chapter one, the handout is at the end of the chapter, you may print it and bring it to class OR you may do it on a separate sheet of paper in your notebook)

Dear Parents and Students:

You are invited to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Western Sierra Collegiate Academy Science Fair! Last year Western Sierra students swept the Placer County STEM Showcase and took six projects to the California State Science Fair where three placed among the best in California. This year Western Sierra Students have the opportunity to continue the tradition of excellence. All middle school and high school students currently enrolled in a science course will participate in this exciting event. Science Fair Projects are Due Monday, March 3rd with judging and grading taking place from March 3rd-6th. The WSCA Science Fair is scheduled on Friday, March 7th.

The WSCA Science Fair project is an authentic summative assessment that follows the Next Generation Science Standards. Students’ final science fair projects will constitute a 3rd quarter summative assessment grade for  Science and Engineering Practices, which span across all science content areas. Specific criteria will be given by the teacher based on each student’s grade level.  This will ensure that they are improving in their ability to design and implement authentic research.

In order to facilitate more meaningful research and in keeping with our mission to educate global citizens, WSCA’s 5th Anniversary Science Fair will follow the theme: Global Issues, Local Ideas. Students are asked to frame their research questions around one of the 30 UN Global Issues. Student researchers are asked to conduct an experiment that provides information or tests variables that are related to a global issue. More detailed instructions on the scope and timing of the project will come from your students’ science teacher on minimum Mondays throughout the year. Classtime will be dedicated to science fair projects according to the WSCA Science Fair Project Schedule. Following the schedule with in-class due dates will insure that your child has a successful experience planning and carrying out this this long-term project.

Thank you for checking with your student to insure that they bring the needed supplies to school within the suggested timeframe  according to the WSCA Science Fair Project Schedule. Equipment (microscopes, safety equipment, test tubes, beakers, oven, probe ware for measuring pH, temperature, etc.) will be available for student use, but if a student project requires a significant amount of consumable supplies (chemicals, living specimens, etc.) a donation to the department is strongly suggested.

For more information please visit the science fair website. You may also email [email protected]  for more information on how you can volunteer or if you'd like more information on creating a successful science fair project.

We look forward to watching your student enjoy this unique opportunity for scientific discovery!

Sincerely,

The Western Sierra Collegiate Academy Science Team:

Welcome to AP Biology!

Please insure that you have a valid email address that you check frequently and that you have joined Google Calendar, all of our labs, lessons, assignments, tests, and adventures have been posted to the calendar which will update in real time if we need to adjust dates (this is awesome for when a lab takes slightly longer than we anticipated, or if you are super-fast on something and we zoom ahead!). Your reading assignments are already delineated for the year, but other assignments such as metacognition notes, articles, and "critter" searches (more on that later!) will be assigned through the homework email and in class. It is critically important for your success that you keep up with the reading assignments. They will be difficult at first, but think of it as the first few weeks of athletic practice: at first you're sore and miserable but then you become a hardened warrior and practice gets easier! Persevere and be gritty with your reading! It will build the kind of academic stamina you need for a grueling, rigorous, four-hour biology test in May.
