Today we started background research for Science Fair.  Students need to complete their research and write a summary of what they found. The topics were:  Rubber bands (potential and kinetic energy), Radish Seeds (germination, microwave ovens, temperature), and Balloons (Archimedes principle, density, temperature).

Summary should be at least 1/2 page and include a list of the websites that were used for research.

No homework! For those who didn't complete the mid-chapter 6 review, the questions are available on the class website, on the WSCA website.

Molecular Structure test:  Students who did not achieve a '3' score, have the opportunity to correct the essay part of the test.  Students may use their notebooks and lab packets to find the correct answers.  Essay corrections need to be written on a separate sheet of paper and attached to the original test.  To be eligible for this retake shortcut, I need the corrections before class on Monday.

The class will start working on Science Fair the first week back in January.  Students will be working in groups for their experiments.  Much of the work will be done in groups with each student responsible for his/her own data collection and report. More details to come!

Today we completed 2 chemistry labs.  Students need to make sure both lab packets are completed and all questions answered. 

 

Many students haven't completed the Retake process for the Scientific Inquiry assessment.  To schedule a reteaching appointment your child must:
     1. complete all formative work that was assigned prior to the assessment and bring this work to the reteaching session
          a. formative work can be found on my website, on the WSCA webpage, under the specific class
     2. correct the assessment (on a separate sheet of paper)
          a. AND explain why each answer is the correct answer
     3. list questions for topics that are still unclear so I can address these in our reteaching
     4. After reteaching, an appointment will be made for your student to retake the exam. Reteaching and retaking the exam may NOT happen on the same day.

Per our grading policy, students should complete this prior to October 9.  If your student has lost the contract, it can be downloaded for the class website.

Science:

Read the "chemistry chpt. 1 student reading" from the class webpage.  Take notes on this information in your science notebook.

We are at the end of our first unit, Scientific Inquiry.  In class students worked through the "Evaluate" section of the e-book.  By Monday, students need to complete all of the Process and Procedures  (#1-9) in their notebooks.  This is an assessment, so please don't help other than to motivate and remind them that this is what we have been practicing for the last 3 weeks.

 

Tuesday we begin the chemistry portion of science class!!!  Lots of labs and experiments so please make sure your child is in class to experience these and get the necessary knowledge from these labs. Some are difficult to replicate at home.

Science:

Students completed their own experiments on Poppers today. They even wore goggles!

Complete process & procedures #9 and 11.  Also, Reflect and Connect questions #1-5.

 

Science:

Each student should have a testable question and hypothesis for the Popper experiment they will design next class period.  Students were asked to outline some of the procedures to expedite this process in class.

 

Scientific Inquiry tests were returned and Non-proficient students were given contracts.  These contracts need to be signed and returned to me.  We filled in most of the contract in class; students need to see me to schedule a reteach session. The 3 week deadline to accomplish everything and retake the test is Oct. 8.

Science:

We are in need of 10 soup cans (or a similar size can) for an experiment in a couple of weeks.  If you have an empty one or two send them to school with your student.

Due to an unexpected meeting this morning, the Scientific Inquiry test is being moved to Thursday.  This was a class decision. We reviewed in class today so students should have a good idea of how prepared they are.  Students were told to write notes for the questions that they didn't know the answer. Thanks for being flexible.

Today, finally the students were able to explore the Mystery Box!  Putting these scientific inquiry skills into practice is fun!

Homework is to complete the "reflect and connect" questions from this explore section.

BSCS curriculum: This is the online curriculum we will be using this year. Students logged in and started to read through it as a class and in groups.  All students need to read the "School Yard Tree" before class Thursday.  Do NOT set up your notebook, yet.

 

Students will be setting up their science notebooks so everyone needs to have their notebooks in class AND their ipads every day.

Students need to come with their graph completed.  Each student needs to circle the number of rubber bands on the graph that, according to his/her scatterplot, is the correct number needed to bungee Barbie safely to the first floor.
