Assignment

Dear parents of 10th graders,

I am proud to announce that the 10th grade English team finds themselves in an unusual situation. We have finished our novel list for the year early. This was the first year of review and revision for our 10th grade English curriculum. We have blended previous curriculum titles and new world literature. I am very proud of our students! There efforts and growth have been remarkable!

Together, we have worked hard to re-align our classes with the AP World History class in an effort to better support and prepare students for their AP World test this year and for AP Literature next year. To that end, Mr. Anya and I would like to add an additional novel to the curriculum for after break. We believe it fits nicely with the new curriculum, adding in another geographical region, another cultural voice, and another sophisticated writing style.

We would like to add Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini to the curriculum. It is available in most bookstores.

Thank you for your continued support!

Assignment

We have started Great Expectations! Attached is the reading assignments, so that you know what is due when. :) We have already discussed Victorian vocabulary and life, which we will continue to add to as we progress through the novel. We have also been working on our cockney accents as we build our inner reading voice with some complex dialect. I have told students that they need to practice their cockney at home. There is a link on our Google class stream if anyone's accent needs work. :)
Audio books, e-books, and a study guide are all up in our Google classroom under the about page for students quick reference.

Assignment

Just as an update as we come to the end of our historical fiction unit...

At this point students should have finished reading the novel, "In the Time of the Butterflies." Hopefully they have enjoyed the story as well as the author's craft.

We had some great discussions and analysis in class. Great discussions and deep learning sometimes take a little longer than planned however. For that reason Mr. Anaya and I moved our test dates back.

We will start our process essay (this one is coming home and should be typed on a computer or ipad and turned in to TurnItIn.com) when we next meet. Outlines will be due Thursday/Friday (1/29-30). Final drafts will be due Monday (2/1).

Our multiple choice unit test will be on Tuesday/Wednesday next week (2/2-3)
