Math 8 (Period 5) Assignments

 We worked on more difficult questions today in class on volumes. Homework (last one of the year!) is to complete the worksheet.

We started day 1 of volumes today. We worked on finding patterns and practicing finding volumes of cylinders, cones, and spheres. Homework is to complete the worksheet AND bring in something that is in the shape of a cone, cylinder, or sphere (hemisphere works as well).

We worked on the Beta Project today in class. I have attached the directions for those who need to review them again. The Beta will be the next class (24th for 5th period and the 25th for 2nd period). The beta will consist of turning in the Beta Project (worth half the grade), and doing a Beta on scatterplots. Students will be given a bunch of points then asked to:

1) graph them

2) find the direction, strength, and form (these will be defined)

3) Write an equation for the line of best fit

4) Make a prediction based upon the graph or equation

 

Students worked on gathering data for their Beta Question in class, and they should be working on completing the requirements for the Beta Assessment.  Students spent the remainder of time working on their Practice Alpha in class. Homework is to complete the Practice Alpha and be prepared to take the Alpha!

We worked on the vocab of scatterplots, and then students had a chance to practice with the worksheet. Students should attempt to write their own trend line before going to goo.gl/z1rGhj to find the actual line of best fit. They should use the actual line to answer the questions on the back.

We reviewed the Alpha and prepared for the Beta. Homework will be to complete the practice beta and study. The practice beta and solutions are attached. Please review previous posts to see notes and video links.

We spent the day reviewing functions. The Alpha assessment will be on May 1st (5th period) and May 2nd (2nd period). Attached are the practice Alpha and solutions, which will be due the day of the Alpha.

We worked on reviewing for the CAASPP test the last few days. Students should be looking over the study guide packet and review questions. Solutions are also attached!

We did a crash course on scatterplots/trend lines/correlation, and two-way tables/segmented bar graphs. Homework is to finish the worksheets handed out in class. They are attached below.

Today we learned about directly proportional. We watched these videos: video 1 and video 2.

We completed our notes on interpreting slope and y-intercept today. We reviewed how to write interpretations, and then we moved into interpreting non-linear functions. Homework is to complete the "Match the Graphs and Stories Sheet." Homework and solutions are attached below. Notes are also attached.

Today we worked on linear vs non-linear equations. We also reviewed functions and learned about how to find and interpret slope and y-intercept from a table, graph, equation, and verbal description. Homework is to complete the Tran Family Worksheet (both sides). An extra worksheet, the notes, and the solutions have been attached.

Students learned about functions and relations in class today. They were lucky enough to hear a function song to help them remember the rules! Homework is to complete the back side of their notes. Solutions are attached below. The Math Dude Video can be found here.

Word problem practice and solutions!

Students took the Alpha Assessment today. Homework is to complete the Practice Beta. Solutions and the blank Beta are attached.

Today we reviewed word problems and solving systems with special cases. Students also started reviewing for the Alpha Assessment which will be the next class period. Homework is to complete the Practice Alpha. 

We worked on both special cases of systems of equations AND an introduction to solving word problems. Homework is to complete the special cases notes that we started in class. Solutions are attached.

Today we covered how to solve a system of equations by using elimination (also known as linear combination). Homework is to complete the worksheet "Solving systems of equations by graphing, subst, and elimination." Notes and solutions are also attached.

Today we learned how to solve a system of equation by substitution. We viewed a video. Students had the option to take notes. My notes have been attached below. Students also had the option to work on the Math 8 Grade Level Solving by Graphing and Substitution Worksheet or a more difficult worksheet titled Solving by Graphing and Substitution Day 2. Both worksheets and solutions have been attached below.

We started learning about systems of equations in class today. Students did a group activity on comparing cell phone plans, and we tied that into solving a system of equations by graphing. Homework is to complete the "Graphing Systems of Equations Practice" worksheet. Extra worksheet and solutions attached. I have also attached some notes.

Students took the Alpha during class today. Homework is to complete the "What's Your Attribute" packet that was handed out. Solutions are attached.

We reviewed slope and graphing today in class. Homework is to work on the practice Alpha assessment. We will spend some time during the next class to review it before taking the Alpha Assessment. This will be the first of 2 Alpha assessments for this unit. The Beta will not be for a couple of weeks.

We reviewed slopes today. Homework is to complete the Slope and Y-Intercept Practice Day 2.

We learned about slope and y-intercept in class today. We discussed and practiced interpreting both in word problems. We also took notes (see attached). Homework is to complete Slope and Graphing Practice Day #1. We will continue working on this concept next class!

We did a leaky bottle experiment in class (attached are the worksheets we did in class). Homework is to complete the Leaky Bottle Follow Up Worksheet. Solutions are attached.

Students took the Alpha assessment today and were able to go back over their scores in class. We started reviewing for the Beta assessment. Homework is to complete the Beta practice. Please see attached for a blank one as well as what an A would look like.

Today we reviewed (via a Jeopardy game) solving equations. Homework is to finish and check the Practice Alpha. Alpha assessment is next class!

Charged iPads need to be brought for next class for MAP testing! We covered solving equations when found within triangles today. Homework is to do a Solving Equations Scavenger Hunt. Solutions are attached.

We worked on translating from words to math today. Homework is to do the Writing Algebraic Equations Worksheet. Solutions are attached.

We learned about special cases today (when there are infinitely many solutions or no solutions to equations). Homework is to finish the Alien Face. See attachments for notes, the Alien Face solutions, and what the completed Alien Face should look like.

We covered how to solve equations with variables on both sides of the equals sign and how to combine terms that are like and on the same side. On the alien face homework, students should choose any 9 more from #1-6,8-10, 12-16, 18-21, 23-25, 27 (so they have 18 total done). All work must be shown for full credit! Students can look at the Learning Target sheet posted if they want more resources for help.

We worked in class on how to solve one and two step equations. We also discussed the distributive property. Homework is to do any 9 problems of #1-6,8-10,12-16,18-21,23 on the Alien Face Worksheet. Work must be done and shown to get full credit. Students can check the Alien Face attached to see if theirs matches.

I have also attached notes for students who want to review what their work should look like.

We started working on expressions and equations in class. Homework is to complete the last page in the Expressions and Equations Practice Packet. It is called Pebble Practice. Solutions are attached.

Students will be using Khan Academy periodically to review/preview 8th grade standards. Please sign the Parent Permission sheet that your child will be bringing home (they should all have it by end of day tomorrow) OR print one out and sign. Please return by Thursday.

Students took the Alpha assessment today in class. Homework is to complete the Beta Practice Assessment. PLEASE check answers with the attached solutions. Alternate proofs for Questions 1:

a) A rectangle has four right angles, so the angles of any rectangle add up to 360 degrees (4 angles x90degrees for each angle). Since there are two triangles that are in a rectangle, each triangle will consist of half of the 360 degrees, which means the angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees.

b) If you take the angles of a triangle and cut them out, then line them up right next to each other, they will make a straight line, and since we know angles along a straight line are supplementary, then the angles of any triangle add up to 180 degrees.

We reviewed for the Alpha Assessment today. Homework is to check the answers from the Practice Alpha Assessment and to study!

 

Today we covered the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem. Students are to complete the worksheet for homework. If students did not finish the coordinate plane worksheet, that is also to be done for homework. Both worksheets and solutions are attached, as well as notes for the Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem.

We worked on Application of the Pythagorean Theorem. Homework was to finish the worksheet. Answers are attached.

We started working on Pythagorean Theorem today in class. Students discovered the Pythagorean Theorem through an exploration lesson. We then talked about how to apply it to right triangles to find missing side lengths. Homework is to choose any 5 from side 1 AND any 5 from side 2 of the worksheet (for a total of ten problems- 5 from each side). Worksheet, notes, exploration less, and solutions are attached.

We completed our work on similar triangles today (and took some notes!) Homework is to complete the similar triangles worksheet (see attached).

We started working on similar triangles today. There is no homework. Students who were absent can do the exploration on their own. It is attached below.

We worked on exterior angles of triangles today (while reviewing interior angles and parallel lines cut by a transversal vocab). Homework is to complete the Interior and Exterior Angles of a Triangle Worksheet. Notes, worksheet, and solutions are posted below. See attached for the optional Algebra Practice with answers (scroll to the next page for the answers).

Today students learned about the Triangle Angle Sum Theorem. They worked on proving the theorem in groups. Homework choices are as follows:

1- They can do the worksheet practice problems (attached below)

2- They can extend their thinking by doing one of the other proofs about the angles of a triangle.

3- They can use Algebra to solve Triangle Angle problems (attached below).

Students discovered the angle relationships that are formed when parallel lines are cut by a transversal. Homework is to complete both sides of the transversal worksheet.

Students got back their Beta assessments today. We started working on Angles and vocab associated with angles. Homework is to complete 3 of the 4 sections on the worksheet.

The Alpha assessment was taken in class, and students got their scores back right away. Based upon the scores, students were then given options about what they could do to prepare for the Beta. Some students chose practice problems, some chose to play an online Jeopardy game related to transformations, some worked with me, and some had the opportunity to create a cartoon involving transformations. Homework is to prepare for the next Beta assessment, which will be the next class time! I have attached extra worksheets below. Links for videos and games are included below. Some of these have to be played on a PC or a device with Flash Media Player.

We reviewed compositions of transformations (basically doing multiple transformations to one figure) in class today. We also reviewed for the Alpha Assessment (which is coming up next class time!).

Homework is to complete the practice Alpha Assessment AND study for the Alpha Assessment!

We did work on rotations today. Homework is to finish the last three pages of the packet "Translations, Reflections, and Rotations Homework."

We covered reflection and translation transformations in class today. Students filled in their foldable notes (extra notes attached below). Homework is to do the translations and reflections worksheet (attached).

Students were handed back their assessments today. They also got back the MAP testing data (which needs to be signed and turned back in!) We started working on transformations (what they are and why they are useful in life). Homework is to find 2 real life examples of a rotation, a reflection, and a translation. Notes have been attached below.

We reviewed the Alpha assessment class. Students had the opportunity to do practice or extension. Homework is to complete the Beta Practice Worksheet.

Students took the Alpha Assessment and hopefully were able to get immediate feedback about areas of strength and areas in need of improvement. Homework is to complete the Pirate Face. The worksheet and face are attached below.

We went over how to compare numbers in scientific notation (the difference between how much more and how many more times). We then reviewed and worked on the practice assessment. Homework is to complete and correct the practice assessment and study for the Alpha Assessment (which will be either on Monday for odds or Tuesday for evens).

We talked today in length about how math is about trying and failing and choosing methods that work best for each person. We spent some time in class practicing both methods, and then students were given a worksheet and told to choose the method they want. Homework is to finish this worksheet AND make sure they worksheet that was due today is finished and corrected. I did not fill out the worksheet from today with everything that the students were supposed to fill out; rather, I wrote the answers and showed the work for both methods. I still want and expect students to write WHY they chose the method they chose.

We started working on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers in scientific notation. Homework is to complete either the Easy, Medium, or Hard worksheet (students chose). Solutions have been attached. As always, PLEASE check your answers online! Notes have also been attached. There are two methods of solving. Notes for each are attached. Students should try both ways. We worked on ordering and comparing numbers in scientific notation. Students also got their Beta Assessments back. Homework is to complete the worksheet that is attached. Please check your solutions!

We learned about scientific notation and how to convert between standard and scientific notation. Students did a scavenger hunt online to practice. In math, students got back the Alpha assessment. Some students were able to choose to extend upon their learning, while other students were able to make corrections and practice for the Beta. Homework is to implement a new study strategy (and start filling out the sheet) for the Beta test! Students were also handed out the Beta rubric so they can see what is expected of them in order to achieve the grade they want.

Students took the Alpha assessment, so the homework is designed to help them practice for the Beta assessment. Homework is to do S41 #1-32 (rest are bonus problems) in the workbook (Math Sprint) and check their answers below! 

We started studying for the Alpha Assessment in class today. We did BINGO, watched videos, did a practice assessment, and did extra practice as a whole class. Homework is to complete the worksheet AND make corrections from the answer key attached. Students also should have chosen a study strategy and will be implementing it starting today.

We learned about exponents that are zero or negative today. Homework is to complete the worksheet labeled "Lesson 6 Practice 8.EE.1 Exponents." Notes, solutions, and PPT are attached.

This is an extremely difficult concept, so I truly hope that students are checking their answers online! Homework is to do the worksheet. Notes and solutions are posted as well.
